Goaltending Philosophy PDF Print E-mail

If "What style do you teach?" is not the goaltending question of the decade, then I don't know what is. Goaltending has evolved arguably more than any other position in all of sports. Just take a look at a picture of a goalie in the 50's, whose face looks fresh off the sewing machine, and pads so small, you're left wondering how every shot didn't find its way to the back of the net. You've all heard the age old statement, "Goaltending has transitioned from stand-up to butterfly." I call this a drastic understatement. The changes made during the "butterfly" era alone are far greater than those made during the transition from stand-up to butterfly. The position of the ice hockey goaltender has been dissected, studied and under careful scrutiny has been shaped and molded to stay current with the faster skaters, harder shots, and more creative players. Goalies are now being taught answers to questions like:

What leg do I recover with?

Where is the best place to hold my catcher?

Should I have dull or sharp skates?

How often should I go down?

How much depth is too much depth?

The list is endless. Each and everyday, new ideas are being put to the test on ice rinks across the globe, hoping to further improve the most exciting position in sports. Give your child the chance to be involved in today's techniques, today's styles, and enjoy the advancements made in goaltending.
